The “Language Education and Research Conference 2022” (LERCON 2022), successfully organized by the Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City (HUB) on the morning of August 23, 2022, brought together language teachers and educators. Those attending the conference also included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Trung - Vice Rector in charge of HUB, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Phuong Dung (MA) - Vice Dean in charge of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Dr. Luu Hon Vu - Vice Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, and university lecturers, PhD candidates, and postgraduate students of HUB as well as of other institutions.
When delivering the opening speech at LERCON 2022, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Trung emphasized the significance of language education in general and foreign languages in particular in the globalized world. The demand for the local workforce who are proficient in both English and Chinese languages still has been growing. This means that the HUB students and those majoring in foreign languages in general have an upper hand in the international labor market. The Vice Rector highly appreciated the reports submitted to the conference, which center on topical themes in language education today. The Vice Rector also asserted that LERCON was a quality scientific forum, and thus suggested that the Faculty of Foreign Languages upgrade the scale of LERCON in the following years, turning this university-level seminar into a national conference, organized in a hybrid format (online and on-site).
There were 6 papers under 2 strands namely English Language Research and Education, and Chinese Language Education and Research, selected for presentation at this conference. That first strand focusing on the English language consisted of “Perceptions of English majored students regarding online assessment in the period of Covid-19” by Dr. Le Thi Thuy Nhung, “Impact of Functional Grammar on improving reading skills for non-language major students” by Mr. Phan Le Vinh Thong (MA) and Ms. Ngo Thi Hanh Quyen (MA), “Experience of first-year English language students in speaking class at HUB” by Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen (MA). The other strand for the Chinese language offered “Principles, practice and difficulties in building Chinese language intermediate corpus of Vietnamese students” by Dr. Luu Hon Vu, “Surveying the situation of compiling exercises of zheng, zhengzai, zhe in current Chinese textbooks” by Dr. Vuong Hue Nghi and Dr. Tran Khai Xuan (Ho Chi Minh City University of Education), and “Discussing the order of acquiring Chinese consonants from the perspective of acquiring Vietnamese children's mother tongue phonetics” by Ms. Dang Thu Lan (MA).
Dr. Luu Hon Vu presenting his report
Upon completion of all the presentations, it was time for the Q&A session during which the lecturers and presenters discussed and exchanged their thoughts in a high scientific spirit, thereby clarifying a number of relevant issues and discovering new research directions for the researchers.
Speaking at the closing session, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Phuong Dung sincerely thanked the participants for submitting their papers and enthusiastically attending the conference, hoping that LERCON will always act as a bridge among academics, lecturers, PhD candidates, and postgraduate students in the field of foreign language research and education. She also looked forward to receiving everyone's support during the upcoming LERCON events in the near future.
