September 20, 2023, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Ho Chi Minh University of Banking (HUB) successfully organized a seminar entitled " Tech application in Translation and Interpretation Practice and Training".
The seminar was chaired by Associate Professor Nguyen Duc Trung, Rector of Ho Chi Minh University of Banking and Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Phuong Dung, Vice Dean, Faculty of Foreign Languages. Faculty members, students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and staff from other units in the university participated in the seminar.
The seminar featured two keynote speakers: Mr Le Huy Khoa, a senior Korean interpreter, Head of Kanata Vietnamese-Korean Language School and Ms Duong Thi Hoai Chan, a senior English interpreter and CEO of Chan Thien My Translation and Consulting Co., Ltd.
Associate Professor Nguyen Duc Trung delivered the opening speech. In his speech, he highlighted the emergence and rapid development of new technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its application in different fields including translation and interpreting. Associate Pro. Nguyen Duc Trung urged academic staff and students to stay up to date with new technologies and make good use of them in teaching and learning. He unveiled HUB’s recent purchase of Chat GPT accounts for staff to use for work as an example of the university’s investment in new technologies.
The keynote speakers, MSc. Le Huy Khoa and MSc. Duong Thi Hoai Chan shared with the audiences their wealth of knowledge and experiences in translation and interpreting practice and training. Mr Le Huy Khoa spoke on ‘26 principles of practice of interpretation’. His presentation provided useful advice and insights into how to self-practice interpreting for students majoring in foreign languages.
Ms Duong Thi Hoai Chan highlighted the application of technologies in teaching and practice of translation and interpreting. The two speakers also provided useful information on job opportunities in translation and interpreting career, skills required in translators and interpreters and useful advice on how to pursuit a career in this profession.
The seminar hosted a lively panel discussion, where the keynote speakers, lecturers and students shared their perspectives on the impacts of technologies on future employment in translation and interpreting, and career and internship opportunities for students majoring in Business English.
The seminar was a valuable opportunity for HUB’s language lecturers and students to learn from experts with ample experiences in translation and interpretation training. The seminar opened up opportunities for collaboration on training and internship between Faculty of Foreign Languages and the two parties.
