Workshop “Application of AI in Language Testing and Assessment”

Ho Chi Minh City, November 5, 2025 – The Faculty of Foreign Languages at the Ho Chi Minh University of Banking  (HUB) hosted an academic seminar titled “Application of AI in Language Testing and Assessment” on the morning of November 5 at Hall HT02, Campus 56 Hoang Dieu 2, Thu Duc. The event attracted a large number of lecturers and graduate students from within and outside the university, marking an important step forward in promoting technology-enhanced language teaching and research at HUB.

The seminar was honored by the presence of Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Trung – Rector of HUB, Dr. Le Thi Thuy Nhung – Acting Vice Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, along with other faculty management, including Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Phuong Dung, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu Hon Vu, and Dr. Nguyen Quang Nhat.

The invited speakers included Mr. Le Nguyen Nhu Anh – PhD candidate at the University of South Australia, and Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy – Senior Product Manager at Dai Truong Phat Education Solutions.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Trung affirmed that the seminar’s theme aligns strongly with the digital transformation era and the strategic vision of the university. He emphasized that AI is not merely a technical tool but a driving force for innovation in teaching and assessment, contributing to a holistic, creative, and human-centered approach to education. He added that the university is steadily implementing its roadmap to integrate AI into teaching, learning, evaluation, and scientific research as part of its aspiration to become an internationally oriented, multidisciplinary institution.

The seminar featured insightful presentations from three key speakers:

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy, Senior Product Manager at Dai Truong Phat Education Solutions, shared practical experiences in using AI for language teaching and assessment. She introduced tools such as Google Flow, Musicful.ai, Gemini, ChatGPT, Canva, and it-test.vn, which support video creation, interactive exercises, and automated speaking evaluation. She stressed that AI not only boosts teaching effectiveness but also motivates learners and fosters their digital competency.

Dr. Nguyen Quang Nhat, Head of ESP Studies at HUB, delivered a presentation on “Enhancing the Effectiveness of Formative Assessment through AI”. He introduced the Bloom-mapped Formative Assessment model and demonstrated platforms such as ai-quiz.io.vn and Canva AI. According to Dr. Nhat, AI enables faster, more accurate, and more personalized feedback for students.

Mr. Le Nguyen Nhu Anh, PhD candidate at the University of South Australia, presented SkillCheck, an AI-powered tool designed to score and provide rubric-based feedback on English writing. He explained the workflow of the tool and highlighted key differences between ChatGPT and SkillCheck, noting that SkillCheck offers more targeted, rubric-aligned feedback suitable for writing assessment.

The discussion session, moderated by Dr. Le Thi Thuy Nhung, was lively and engaging. Participants, lecturers and students alike, raised questions about digital literacy development, controlling AI usage in learning, and nurturing critical thinking skills. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Trung reiterated that the key distinction between humans and AI lies in contextual understanding and creativity, qualities that education must cultivate to ensure learners become masters of technology rather than dependents on it.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Le Thi Thuy Nhung expressed sincere gratitude to the speakers and attendees. She emphasized that AI cannot replace the role of teachers; instead, it should serve as an intelligent companion that enhances teaching and assessment effectiveness. The seminar concluded on an open and professional note, promising new research directions and expanded applications of AI in language education at HUB in the near future.
